Being an Assistant Coach

This picture above is from the coaches office. We use a chalkboard to draw plays. I made this suggestion to our head coach. I will get into this more later on.

As I write this blog it is to give insight into coaching from a failed head coach and current assistant coach. I am not in anyway an expert on the subject, but more a constant learner in this amazing sport of basketball.

I am into my 5th year of coaching high school level basketball. One stint has a head coach and 4 as assistant varsity.

If you aren't on Twitter then get there as quickly as you can to follow a boatload of coaches that share their knowledge. This platform is amazing right now to learn from. Most notably the ones I recommend are @bballimmersion @FastModel @CoachJimBoone @brendansuhr @dshow23 @CoachBobStarkey @RadiusAthletics @thecoachtube @CoachBrotherton @DynamicCoaches @CoachingBball @EricPMussleman @GregWhite32 @hardwood_hustle @CoachTJRosene @PGCBasketball @TerryBattenberg @AlanSteinJr

There are many more, but those come to mind first.

I feel right now this blog will be about how to be an assistant basketball coach. I see a lot of vlogs and blogs about being head coaches and new plays to run. I feel this could be different and helpful to those wanting to get into coaching or where they are at currently.

First, as an assistant coach, you may get a position and haven't met the head basketball coach because they may be new also. My first assistant position as at a private school that I did part-time. I met with the athletic director and took an assistant soccer coach position along with being an assistant basketball coach. I didn't meet the basketball coach until about a week before practice began. So you may take a position not even knowing what the philosophy is.

You must be flexible and be willing to use their language so everyone is on the same page. Realize anything you suggest to the head coach......is just a suggestion. Just like in the picture above......what I gave to him was just a suggestion for a BLOB. He may not use it at all. But these allow us to talk about if our current personnel will fit into this play. Any play I have seen is stolen and not original.

Also, as you get into the season make sure you do your best at where you are. Do each job duty like you would want your players to work.

Good luck this coming season.
